Opportunities to Learn
- By FMLC StaffGlobal trade and seaports are hot topics these days as policy makers and business leaders begin to focus on the economic development opportunities offered by our nation's seaports with the scheduled 2014 opening of the Panama Canal on the horizon, federal stimulus dollars starting to flow and the world beginning to emerge from economic recession.
An important upcoming event to learn more about the opportunities and challenges facing the Southeastern United States as its seaports compete for new international cargo business flowing through the canal and up from South America is the First Annual Southeast Freight Conference that Cargo Business News will host in Charlotte, North Carolina, September 29-30, 2009. This is the only event of its kind that specifically focuses on the dynamic U.S. Southeast shipping gateways. More information is available at www.southeastfreightconference.com.
Closer to home, State Senator Tony Hill and the International Longshoremen's Association are hosting a series of four seminars around the state to answer workers' questions about Florida's new seaport security laws, which went into effect on July 1, 2009. Also participating to answer questions will be representatives from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the Senate Committee on Military Affairs and Domestic Security.
The seminars are free and open to the public. They will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on:
- Tuesday, 7/28/2009: Jaxport Cruise Terminal
- Wednesday, 8/5/2009: Pier 29, Port Everglades
- Thursday, 8/6/2009: Terminal 12, Port of Miami
- Wednesday, 8/19/2009: Cruise Terminal 3, Port of Tampa
