Welcome to the Florida Maritime Leadership Coalition.

- By Martha Harbin

The Florida Maritime Leadership Coalition advocates for Florida's vital maritime transportation industry, which provides more than 350,000 good-paying jobs and contributes more than $74 billion a year to the Florida economy.

FMLC's mission is to be a communications and political tool to support state advocacy efforts on behalf of Florida's Maritime Industry.

Members of the organization include the state's public deepwater seaports, cargo and cruise lines, trucking companies and organized labor.

FMLC represents the maritime industry at the state level on issues impacting the competitiveness of Florida's maritime industry with other states and countries. Issues include those that impact the cost of doing business in Florida, such as duplicative security costs, the amount of state funds dedicated to port infrastructure funding and other issues that put our state on an uneven playing field as we seek to preserve and grow our maritime industry. Consider: 70 Percent of goods consumed in Florida arrive via our seaports yet less than 2 percent of transportation funds are spent on expanding and improving our ports.

FMLC, through its communications portal www.floridamaritimeleaders.com, provides a steady stream of news and updates relevant to Florida's maritime transportation industry and those businesses that provide services to the industry. FMLC's Web portal also delivers important messages, including proposed legislation and regulatory changes, to those who subscribe to the site. Coalition members also may sign-up to receive important "first-alert" e-mail notices of port news and updates providing valuable insights into new business opportunities.

The Florida Maritime Leadership Coalition is being created to increase the presence of the maritime industry with state leaders as important decisions and policies are being determined regarding security and economic development stimulus funding. To quickly launch this non-profit effort, we are suggesting a contribution $2,500, but we are flexible to accommodate smaller companies, individuals and non-profits. Our successes this year and feedback from our coalition partners and members will determine FMLC's activities and membership structure in future years.

We understand that your business or organization is experiencing challenging economic conditions, and we hope that you will consider your support of the FMLC to be an investment in the future of our vital maritime industry. To discuss your company or organization's level of involvement in the FMLC, please call Executive Director Martha Harbin at (850) 222-8028 or via cell at (850) 251-2803.

Join today and lend your voice to a growing chorus of businesses and organizations that are promoting Florida maritime transportation industry.
