Senate to Vote on Seaport Security Legislation on Thursday - Take Action

- By Martha Harbin

The Florida Maritime Leadership Coalition "Make Waves" Advocacy Site (www.maritimeleaders.com) is updated with messaging targeting Thursday's (March 26th) Senate Military Affairs and Domestic Security Committee meeting.  Senate Bill 2684 is expected to be brought up for a vote and we're asking you to visit the advocacy center and take action.

On Thursday, the committee is expected to amend the current bill with a committee substitute (which essentially replaces the original bill language).  An attempt was made in this substitute legislation to address the maritime industry's concern about multiple background checks and separate state and federal security requirements, but not only does it fall far short of the mark, it actually makes the situation worse!

If we are going to eliminate the separate state background check requirement, we need your help.  Please take a minute to visit the advocacy action center and send to legislators a message protesting the criminal background checks that Florida continues to require even though the federal government now requires you to obtain a TWIC card.
